Snowden Has a Job In Russia, Lawyer Says

Updated Oct. 31, 2013 5:38 p.m. ETMOSCOW—National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden will begin working Friday for “one of the largest Russian websites,” said Anatoly Kucherena, his Russian lawyer.
Meanwhile, Hans-Christian Ströbele, a lawmaker with Germany’s opposition Greens, said he met with Mr. Snowden in Moscow on Thursday, and that the American is prepared in principle to help Germany investigate allegations of surveillance by U.S. intelligence, the Associated Press reported.
Mr. Ströbele said on his website that Mr. Snowden gave him a letter to German authorities that he will present in Berlin on Friday. The lawmaker told ARD television that Mr. Snowden “made clear he knows a great deal,” the AP reported.
Mr. Kucherena, in a phone interview, declined to say which company would be employing Mr. Snowden and whether his client would work from home or go back and forth to work.

“That is not being disclosed,” Mr. Kucherena said. Mr. Kucherena separately told various news outlets on Thursday that Mr. Snowden would work in a technical-support capacity.
The announcement comes some three months after Pavel Durov, one of the founders andchief executive of the popular Russian social-networking site VKontakte, proposed that Mr. Snowden come work for him there.
“Right now, we’re not commenting on this,” Mr. Durov said Thursday when asked whether he had offered Mr. Snowden a job.

An alleged photograph of Mr. Snowden out and about in the Russian capital surfaced for the first time on Thursday on LifeNews, a Russian tabloid site that has close ties to the country’s security services.
The photo showed a man who appeared to be Mr. Snowden wearing a newsboy cap, without his glasses, leaning on the rail of a tour boat on the Moscow River. In the background is Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral.
Russia granted Mr. Snowden so-called temporary asylum for a renewable period of one year on Aug. 1, a designation that allows him to live, work and travel in the country and seek citizenship if he stays in the country for half a decade.
