ISTANBUL—Turkey moved Friday to restrict alcohol sales and ban advertisements, worrying producers and drawing fire from secular Turks who accuse the government of having an Islamist agenda.
A bill passed by the Parliament would ban retail alcohol sales between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and halt all advertising and promotion of alcohol-related products. It also seeks to eradicate scenes that could be construed as encouraging consumption of alcohol from television shows, movies and music videos.
President Abdullah Gul was expected to sign the bill, meaning the restrictions could take effect soon—a prospect that sent shares in local brewers down.
