Brazil's Economy Stumbles in First Quarter

RIO DE JANEIRO—Brazil’s economy stumbled at the beginning of 2013 amid weak consumer spending and declining industrial production, underscoring fears that Latin America’s largest country may be headed for a third straight year of subpar growth.
Gross domestic product expanded a meager 1.9% in the first quarter from a year earlier, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, or IBGE, said Wednesday, falling short of economists’ estimates for 2.38% growth. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2012, GDP expanded 0.6%, or an annualized rate of 2.4%.
