Updated Jan. 26, 2014 1:41 p.m. ETAt least 21 people were killed Sunday when a boat full of tourists capsized off India’s Andaman Islands, a government official said.
“Twenty-one have been confirmed dead and 23 have been rescued,” Anand Prakash, chief secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Islands told The Wall Street Journal.
Rescue operations are continuing, he said Sunday night. There were no foreign tourists on board, he added.
The remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a popular tourist destination known for pristine beaches and scuba diving spots.
While they are part of India, they are closer to Thailand and Myanmar than they are to the Indian mainland.
