Senate Backs Baucus as China Envoy

WASHINGTON—Sen. Max Baucus easily won U.S. Senate approval to become ambassador to China, removing a centrist Democrat from the polarized Senate and opening up a seat that Democrats hope to fill with a candidate who has a shot at winning a six-year term in the November elections.
The Senate voted 96-0 to confirm Mr. Baucus, who was expected to be sworn in as ambassador as soon as Thursday.
