Lisbon Blames Christie's for Aborted Auction

The Portuguese prime minister blamed Christie’s for a bureaucratic foul-up that led to 85 state-owned works by Spanish surrealist Joan Miró being pulled from a London auction.
Portugal’s debt-stricken government had planned to sell the works, the property of a nationalized bank and valued at about $49 million, to help clean up its finances. The auction had been eagerly awaited by art collectors but in Portugal it caused an outcry…
