BERLIN—A day after recording one of the best election results in her conservative party’s history, Angela Merkel faced a new challenge—finding a coalition partner.
With her preferred partner, the Free Democrats, out of parliament, Ms. Merkel has only two options: the center-left Social Democrats, or SPD, and the Greens.
Officials from Ms. Merkel’s Christian Democrats have ruled out a tie-up with the former communist Left party, the only other party to win entry to parliament in Sunday’s elections.
