SHANGHAI—The court-ordered execution Wednesday of a street vendor in north China convicted of a double-murder sparked an outpouring of sympathy, the latest indication that attitudes may be softening about capital punishment in a nation that leads the world in carrying them out.
Early Wednesday, Xia Junfeng was executed by lethal injection on orders of a court in Shenyang City. In late 2009, the 36 year old was convicted of stabbing to death two urban security officials in the city after they repeatedly blocked him from peddling grilled meat on the street.
