As Syrian forces pressed ahead with a major military operation aimed at crushing rebels in an arc of suburbs around the capital, residents said they were trapped without access to food and medical supplies—in neighborhoods they fear are contaminated by chemical weapons.
Syria’s government security forces had cordoned off the region months before the latest offensive began on Wednesday with bombardments and, residents and opposition groups said, poison-gas attacks that killed over 1,100 people. The government denies having used poison gas.
