JINAN, China—China’s first show trial of the social-media age concluded on Monday with prosecutors demanding a stiff penalty for ousted political heavyweight Bo Xilai, as he criticized interrogation methods and suggested a romantic link between his wife and his former police chief—the two key witnesses against him.
Lawyers and legal experts questioned whether the relative openness of the trial had helped or hindered China’s leaders in stifling their worst political crisis since 1989, as inconsistencies appeared in official accounts of proceedings published on a Chinese version of Twitter.
