Vigilance Increases as Bird Flu Spreads

HUZHOU, China—A deadly new strain of avian flu has spread to new parts of China, sparking worries that the disease could be difficult to keep from spreading to other places—including neighboring countries.
On Sunday, authorities raised the total death toll by two to 13 and said two new cases of H7N9 bird flu infections were found in the central part of the country, in Henan province. That follows confirmation Saturday of a 7-year-old girl infected in Beijing, which is in the north. Until Friday, the cases had been largely confined to Shanghai, on China’s eastern coast, and neighboring provinces.
