NEW DELHI—A Swiss woman alleged a group of men gang-raped her Friday night near Orchha, a popular foreign-tourist destination in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, according to local police.
The woman said in a police report that she was raped by five to seven men, while her husband, traveling with her, was beaten and tied up, according to Inspector A.K. Budholiya of Datiya district, where the rape case was filed.
This episode comes three months after the brutal gang rape and beating of a 23-year-old student in Delhi, who later died from her injuries. That attack received widespread international attention, and five men were charged. They denied wrongdoing, and the trial is under way in Delhi. One of the five hanged himself in his Delhi jail cell earlier this month.
A sixth accused faces proceedings in juvenile court.
In Friday’s case, the woman and her husband were on their way from Orchha to Agra when the alleged incident took place, according to police. The couple were making the trip by bicycle and Friday evening set up a tent for the night along the road, according to Mr. Budholiya. This was around 50 kilometers away from Orchha, and one kilometer from the nearest village, the police officer said.
The couple said in their report that later that evening five to seven men attacked them, tied up the man and raped the woman. They allegedly fled with the couple’s laptop computer, mobile phone and 10,000 rupees ($185) in cash, Mr. Budholiya said.
The couple were sent to a hospital in Gwalior Friday night and released Saturday morning, he added.
The Datiya police have registered a case of rape against seven unidentified persons, Mr. Budholiya said. Several men had been called in for questioning, he said, but declined to say how many. The Swiss couple are being escorted back to Datiya, to help identify possible suspects.
Attempts to reach the couple were not successful.
